Since World War II the Company has allied itself to the modern fan trade and has sought
to promote the development of the fan engineering; heating and ventilation; and aircraft
industries. Cranfield University's association with the Company first began in 1953. At
that time the Company began awarding an annual scholarship bursary tenable at the College
of Aeronautics, as the university was then known, for the advancement of wind tunnel
research or other aeronautical research work. A further bursary was awarded when it
subsequently became the Royal Aeronautical College. In 1969 the Cranfield Institute of
Technology was established and the Company was first invited to provide a representative
to sit on the Court of Governors.
Since the Institute assumed university status the Company has sought to encourage
students by awarding a silver medal and cash prize in each of three disciplines, namely,
Avionics, Aerodynamics and Fluid Engineering.

Recognising that the traditional fan is essentially a fashion accessory, the Company
helps to support students in the fashion industry by awarding a bursary for post graduate
research at the School of Fashion & Textiles. Students at the School were
invited to design the leaf for a fan that the Company is producing to mark the Golden
Jubilee. |

Elizabeth Lansbury Nursery School, Poplar
Situated near the East India Dock Road in one of London's most deprived boroughs the
Lansbury Estate was built in 1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain. The nursery school
caters for the infant children of multi-cultural, low income families who are resident on
the estate.
It was in June 1993 that the Company's association with the school first began to
develop. The Court had expressed their support for devoting some of the Company's
charitable funds to an Inner City school. An approach was made to the headteacher and she
and her successor proposed an imaginative landscaping project for the school playground
which was poorly maintained due to lack of funding. The project was approved by the Court
and funded by a legacy from Past Master Dick Smallman and contributions from Liverymen.
The gardens were officially opened on 19th. July 1995 in the presence of members of the
Smallman family and a brass plaque was unveiled to mark the occasion.
The Company is represented on the Board of Governors by Mr. Liveryman Peter Olley - a
Past Master of the Constructors Company - who provides valuable assistance liaising with
the local authority on matters connected with the upkeep of the fabric of the school
buildings.
Situated on the site of a former tannery the school suffered a major setback in 2000
when an inspection revealed traces of cyanide in the garden soil. Most of the garden had
to be excavated to ascertain the full extent of the problem but fortunately it was later
declared safe. It has now been returfed and restored to its former glory.
Headteacher Frances Wimpress describes the garden as being, '...a unique and
beautiful haven for the children. It is a constant source of pleasure for them not only as
a recreational facility but also as a learning environment.' |

HMS Westminster is a Type 23 Duke Class Frigate (F237) and the second to bear the name.
The ship was built by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders Limited on the Tyne and was launched by
Lady Livesay on 9 February 1992. The ship has been affiliated to the Company since her
commissioning in 1994 and a close association has been enjoyed with each of her commanding
officers and other members of her crew. Members of the Company have visited her on several
occasions both in Portsmouth and in the Pool of London.
Although originally designed to perform an anti-submarine role in the North Atlantic
she has demonstrated her versatility when deployed operationally in the Gulf, off the West
Coast of Africa - where she provided aid to Sierra Leone, and in the Falkland Islands. She
also played a prominent role in the Millennium celebrations at Greenwich where she was
moored to buoys positioned directly on the meridian line.

217 (London) Field Squadron (Explosive Ordinance
Disposal) Royal Engineers (V)
The Squadron is one of the six Territorial Engineer units which comprise 101 Engineer
Regiment (V) and has been associated with the Company since 1988. The Squadron was founded
in 1861 and its engineers served with distinction in the Boer War and both World Wars. In
peacetime the role of the Squadron is to clear and dispose of unexploded mines and bombs,
both at home and overseas, and to this end it keeps itself in a constant state of
readiness with rigorous training activities.
Members of the Company always enjoy visiting the Squadron at its base in Holloway,
North London, and occasionally have the opportunity to observe its engineers carrying out
exercises in London. |

Formed in 1912 the Squadron has the distinction of being the first fixed wing squadron
and, having earnt numerous battle honours in both World Wars, has adopted the motto

and principally performs a tactical reconnaissance role in support of army units on the
ground. Its pilots have to be capable of precision flying at low level both in daylight
