On Monday 18th November 2024 the Master and Wardens, together with some members of the Court and the Clerk visited RNAS 846at their base at Yeovilton.
The Fan Makers were guests of Commander James Coleman and his Squadron which flies Merlin Mk 3 helicopters. The day was to mark the affiliation between the Fan Makers and RNAS 846 and for the 2 parties to get to know one another. After refreshments upon our arrival, we had a formal welcome in one of the hangars with the Master presenting a framed Memorandum of Association to RNAS 846 and in exchange we were given a fan shaped rotor on a wooden mount. We were then shown round a Merlin helicopter after which we had a brief demonstration of the versatility of the helicopter and its crew.
After such arduous work we were entertained to lunch in the Mess, before the serious work of flying that was planned for us that afternoon. Those below a certain age were flown out to the Bristol Channel in a Merlin, whilst 4 slightly older Fan Makers had their flying skills tested on a Merlin simulator!
To end the day, we were shown the MAG Room and given an overview on RNAS 846’s Maritime Anti-Terrorist Group activities.
A very enjoyable and hospitable day then ended with drinks with various members of the Squadron.
Thank you RNAS 846 and long may our affiliation flourish.
PM John Hayes
